Fluorescent recovery after photobleaching revealed that bacterially induced actin reorganization at the site of entry hinders diffusion of small molecules, thereby restricting diffusion of InsP3, enriching InsP3 receptors, and favoring sustained local Ca2+ increases that are of long (tens of seconds) duration, peaking 15 minutes after Shigella makes contact with the host cell (66). At the other extreme, asymptomatic patients have been discovered in the course of screening family members. |
